Welcome to the 2010 KinoRurik Film Festival!

KinoRurik takes place in Stockholm and Uppsala between the 18th and 28th of March 2010. Ever since the start in 1999, KinoRurik has offered the audience a chance to see the very best of Russian cinema. The festival recipe is to mix award winning contemporary cinema with the classics of the Soviet era! The films have English or Swedish subtitles.

Tickets and Festival Pass

In order to attend any screening at the festival you are required to show your festival pass along with your screening ticket.

  • The Kinorurik Festival Pass (required): 20 SEK. In order to attend any screening at the festival you are required to show your festival pass along with your screening ticket. The festival pass is personal and valid throughout the 2010 festival in Stockholm and Uppsala. Free festival pass? Pre-order via our website at least one day before going to the festival.   • Single Screening Ticket: 80 SEK
  • Note: Tickets to the opening at Grand 18/3: 200 SEK. Tickets to the Special screening at Slottsbiografen in Uppsala 27/3: 150 SEK
  • The easiest way to buy your tickets is to contact KinoRurik staff at the cinema up to 45 minutes before the screening. Keep in mind that the tickets are limited – rather be safe than sorry!

Finding the Cinemas

  • Grand, Sveavägen 45 in Stockholm: By metro from T-Centralen; take the green line towards Hässelby Strand (Vällingby, Åkeshov) and go two stations until you reach Rådmansgatan. At street level – take the first right and walk for about 250 meters. Still not sure? Use this map!
  • Slottsbiografen, Nedre Slottsgatan 6 in Uppsala: Walk straight ahead along Bangårdsgatan from the train station, crossing Kungsgatan, to the river. Turn right along the river, cross the river at Drottninggatan and walk straight ahead until you reach Nedre Slottsgatan, just below the park, where you turn left. Still not sure? Use this map!

Adventures of Alenushka and Erema (Приключения Алёнушки и Ерёмы)

Somewhere, sometime, in a fantasy world reminding of ancient Russia, the beautiful Alena is on her way to see aunt Efrosinya when she suddenly encounters a mystical stranger who hands over a bunch of charmed apples. Later she falls in love with the handsome musician Erema, but the strangest of things happens when he eats one of the apples – he falls in love with the tsar's daughter! What should Alena do now?

Bastards (Сволочи)

Action/Drama/War, 2005. Duration: 98 min. Subtitles in English. Directed by Aleksandr Atanesyan. Cast: Andrei Panin, Andrei Krasko, Sergei Rychenkov.

In the year of 1943, colonel Vishnevetsky is released from prison to organize a military school with the sole purpose of educating saboteurs. The students are prison teenagers without a future or a family to care for them. The hard education is followed by the first mission: to destroy a fascist hold oil depot in the Alps. As they balance between life and death they have two options; escape to nothing, or to become a hero for the land that once destroyed them.

Awards: "Best picture" at the Russian MTV Awards in 2007.

Battle for Berlin (Битва за Берлин)

History/War Drama, 1971. Duration: 79 min. Subtitles in English. Directed by Yury Ozerov & Yury Bondarev. Cast: Yevgeni Burenkov, Vladen Davydov, Fritz Diez, Larisa Golubkina

In 2010 it is 65 years ago since the Red army defeated the Nazis and the second world war came to an end. Battle for Berlin is a historical war drama picturing the final battles of Berlin in 1945 where the Soviet flag finally was raised over the German parliament. This movie portraits fictitious soldiers along with real war heroes. The Red Army leader, Marshall Zhukov, is played by Mikhail Ulyanov who recieved great praise and now has played the part of Zhukov in fifteen other movies.

Crawfishlike (Какраки)

Drama/Comedy, 2009. Duration: 105 min. Subtitles in English. Directed by Ilya Demichev

Mikhail Mikhailovich has it all; a happy family, money and power, but still something is missing. One day he meets a young girl called Nastya... The main character is played by Mikhail Efremov known from the earlier KinoRurik movies "Moving" and "The Sky. The Plane. The Girl".

Hipsters (Стиляги)

Musical, 2008. Duration: 125 min. Subtitles in English. Directed by Valery Todorovsky

This is the story about a group of teenagers in the cold Moscow of the 50's. Here they fight for their rights to be special; to listen to diffrent music, to wear different clothes, to make love in a different way. The main character, Mels (Marx, Engels, Lenin, Stalin), is spending the nights with his loyal Komsomol-companions doing raids against non-communist dance palaces. But one night his conception of life is put on a hold as he meets the colorful and fearless Polina. A new world takes place before his eyes and ears as Polina shows him a world of secret stores, jazz music and true romance.

Laskoviy May (Ласковый май)

Drama/Bio-pic/Music/Comedy, 2008. Duration: 110 min. Subtitles in English. Directed by Vladimir Vinogradov

Laskoviy May – "Sweet May" – was one of the biggest pop bands in the Soviet Union during the 80's. This movie reveals the true story behind the bands history in a colourful drama full of music and nostalgia. But it also portraits a time of youth freedom in the aftermath of Gorbachev's perestroika. The band went down along with the Soviet Union in 1991, but yet to this day, songs like the melancholic Belye rosy – "White Roses" – are still being played at the Russian radiostations.

Song from the Southern Seas (Семья)

Drama/Comedy, 2009. Duration: 80 min. Subtitles in English. Directed by Marat Sarulu

This is the story of a Russian and a Kazakh family who have lived as neighbors and friends for several years. When the Russian – blonde – wife gives birth to a son of decidedly darker skin, fifteen years of suspicion and acrimony arises between all of them.

S.S.D (Horror Stories of a Soviet Childhood) (С.С.Д. (Страшилки советского детства))

Mystery/Horror, 2008. Duration: 110 min. Subtitles in English. Directed by Vadim Shmelev. Cast: Anfisa Chekhova, Dmitry Kubasov, Evgeniya Khirivskaya

In the reality-tv show "Pioneer camp", five girls and five boys are selected to compete for a grand prize of one million rubels. The ten adolescences are being sent to an abandon Soviet summer camp in the woods outside Moscow. The rules are simple; every week one kid have to leave and the last man standing gets to win the first prize. So it seemed. Instead a man with a horse face turns up informing the prize is now about survival. In this blood breaking movie we follow this horse face man and his ways of realizing the horror stories of his Soviet childhood.

Strayed (Заблудившийся)

Mystery/Thriller, 2009. Duration: 90 min. Subtitles in English. Directed by Akan Sataev. Cast: Andrey Merzlikin, Tungyshbai Al-Tarazi, Aiganym Sadykova, Alma Rulas, Ilyas Sadyrov, Igor Gorshkov, Azamat Ilyasov, Daulet Abdygaporov,  Aleksei Khramenkov

Strayed is a thrilling movie recorded in the desert stepplands of Kazakhstan. A family along with their newborn find themselves lost on a never ending highway far from civilization. As the dusk moves in their only option is to spend the night sleeping in the car. In the following morning the father wakes up terrified not finding his wife and child. The surroundings are all desert upon desert and the father starts asking himself what possibly could have happened. In a desperate attempt to find his family he encounters an old house occupied by a mystic family who seems to know more than they what are willing say. Strayed is produced in Kazakhstan with Russian dialogue. Be sure not to miss this years other Kazakhstan-movie: Songs from the Southern Seas!

Tambourine, Drum (Бубен, барабан)

Drama, 2009. Duration: 105 min. Subtitles in English. Directed by Aleksei Mizgiryov

In a grey and depressing environment this film unfolds the poetic story of Katya. A small town girl who finds herself trapped in a mining community selling stolen books for a living. But one day it all changes when a soldier meets the retina of her eye. As the meeting turns into relationship, Katya finds her life bearable. But the happy faces will soon fade to black as the relationship comes to an end. Katya runs down the spiral of unhappiness.

Awards: Tambourine, Drum won "The silver leopard" and "Special Prize of the Jury" at the 2009 Locarno International Film Festival.

Taras Bulba (Тарас Бульба)

History/Action/Drama, 2009. Duration: 129 min. Language: Russian, Ukrainian, Polish. Subtitles in English. Directed by Vladimir Bortko. Cast: Bogdan Stupka, Igor Petrenko, Vladimir Vdovichenkov

From a Nikolai Gogol story of the same name. Middle of the 16 century. The great Polish state has entered a golden era of power. The Polish aristocracy is subjugating Ukrainian territory with fire and sword, establishing its order everywhere. All those who refused to submit to Polish domination congregated in the lower Dnepr region, in Zaporizhia Sech. Here, former slaves became masters of the destiny of all their people. Very soon Zaporizhia Sech became a dangerous neighbor for the great empire. And already the Cossacks are preparing for a campaign against Poland. The old Cossack Taras Bulba had two sons. They had no equals in the battles at the walls of besieged Dubna. They were destined to become the pride of the Cossacks.

The Star (Звезда)

War drama, 2002. Duration: 93 min. Subtitles in English. Directed by Nikolai Lebedev. Cast: Igor Petrenko, Artem Semakin, Alexei Panin, Alexei Kravchenko, Anatoly Guschin, Amadu Mamadakov, Yury Laguta, Andrei Yegorov, Ekaterina Vulichenko

It's the summer of 1944 and the Red Army battles the western fronts of the Soviet Union. A group of young soldiers are sent behind the enemy lines for a mission that could change the outcome of the battle. Their contact signal becomes "star" and in the end they have to pay a high price to complete this hazardous mission.

Awards: The Star won the best picture-award at the KinoRurik festival in 2002 and has also been screened at the 2004 and 2007 festivals. It has also recieved the Russian Federation National Award "The Golden Eagle" and The Nika Award for best music. The Star was the number one box office hit in Russia in the year of 2002.

Ward No. 6 (Палата № 6)

Drama, 2009. Duration: 83 min. Subtitles in English. Directed by Karen Shakhnazarov

Dr. Ragin is the doctor who ends up being a patient in his own ward. This movie is an adaption of the Anton Chekhov novel "Palata Nr. 6". The movie follows the Chekhov story in a semi-documentary style and takes us to a real mental institution, thus the extras are real patients. The main character – Dr. Ragin – is played by the famous movie and tv actor Vladimir Ilin (War and Peace, Burnt by the Sun).

In 2009, the director Karen Shakhnazarov visited KinoRurik for the screening of his film "Vanished Empire", which also won the best movie-award "Rurik 2009". Shakhnazarov have participated in earlier KinoRurik festivals with several movies, including "The Rider Named Death" and "Courier".

Awards: The Golden Eagle for best directing at the Russian Film Acadamy 2009, and awards at the Moscow international film festival 2009, the Russian Renaissance Festival in Australia and the Russian film festival Sattelite over Poland. Ward No. 6 is the Russian selection for the 2010 Oscars.
